Garden of Refuge’s first seed was sewn in 2021 with two very small garden beds provided by VKC and a dream.
Pam, the director of River, envisioned a fresh source of food and an educational opportunity for the working homeless families in their program. Those two tiny beds tested a theory that we could grow food in the lower parking lot on the asphalt. VKC volunteers donated and built two more beds to expand this experiment the same year.
Lowe’s loved the project and rolled thru in 2022 with several employees, materials, and tools. They donated, built, and shoveled soil into 12 very large garden beds - in a single day!
Parents, children, and volunteers have since harvested over 1,300 lbs of produce!
